The cooperation of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic with the Office of the High Commissioner of the United Nations (UNHCR) for Refugees began with the inception of UNHCR offices in the Kyrgyz Republic in 1995.

The Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic attaches great importance to the execution of the Kyrgyz Republic's international obligations undertaken in accordance with international treaties on human rights.

Protection of refugee rights is the obligation of the Kyrgyz Republic in accordance with the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees of 1967, ratified in 1996. National Law of the Kyrgyz Republic "On Refugees" was adopted on March 25, 2002.

The main directions of cooperation are to strengthen the capacity of the judicial system of the Kyrgyz Republic by providing technical assistance and training.

UNHCR supports the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic to cooperate with the International Association of Judges for the rights of refugees. As part of this collaboration took part of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic in the meeting of the Association in 2005. Deputy Chairman of the Association held a round table for the judges of the Kyrgyz Republic to proceedings relating to the Status of Refugees in 2006.

Training of judges of the Kyrgyz Republic under international refugee law is carried out systematically, starting from the date of accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Convention to ensure that courts can make informed decisions on matters relating to legislation on refugees.

For the duration of the training activities, over 50 judges were able to attend a course on refugee law in Kyrgyzstan. Also supported the program of short courses on Refugee Law in the Russian Federation and abroad.
